Muddy Puddles

Let's take a look at episode 1 of Peppa Pig in Cantonese. Here, Peppa and her family stay true to their piggish nature and have some fun in muddy puddles. One thing I noticed while transcribing this was the number of particles (ge3, wo3, la1, etc.). I feel that these may be more prevalent in Cantonese because they add expressiveness where intonation would be used in non-tonal languages. That's just my guess; let me know what you think. Transcribing this episode was a fun challenge, albeit more difficult than I anticipated. Feel free to suggest corrections in the comments. Introduction

There are many Cantonese movies and videos available online but anything aimed at adults tends to be very difficult to follow for someone at my level. Enter Peppa Pig! Fortunately, lots of Cantonese Peppa Pig episodes have been posted on youtube. The episodes are just under five minutes long, which is a good chunk of content to study without being overwhelming. The vocabulary is challenging enough for me and I love the voices. I will attempt to transcribe and translate Peppa Pig episodes on this blog. For the transcription, I will use Yale romanization , which was used in my college courses. For people starting Cantonese, I would highly recommend getting familiar with Yale romanization because it allows you to write down words and use dictionary apps like Pleco. My first step when learning Cantonese was to make flashcar...
